Jack Smith: The Unflinching Special Counsel

Harvard JD and Justice Department Veteran

John Luman Smith (born June 5, 1969), known professionally as Jack Smith, is an American attorney with an illustrious career at the United States Department of Justice. Smith has served as an assistant US Attorney and head of the Department's Public Integrity Section.

Special Counsel Announcement and Duties

Smith was appointed special counsel by Attorney General Merrick Garland on Friday to oversee criminal investigations into the retention of classified documents at former President Donald Trump.

As special counsel, Smith is responsible for overseeing the Department of Justice's (DOJ) ongoing investigations into Trump's handling of classified information after he left office. These investigations include the possible obstruction of justice and the retention of highly sensitive documents at Trump's Mar-a-Lago resort.

Reputation as an Unflinching Judge

Colleagues describe Smith as a highly respected and experienced prosecutor who is known for his independence and commitment to the rule of law. He is considered unafraid to make difficult judgments, even when it comes to high-profile cases.

Supreme Court Appeal and Trump Indictment

In a recent development, Smith's office asked the Supreme Court to clear the way for Trump to be tried on charges related to the retention of classified documents. Smith argues that the charges strike at the heart of American democracy and that there is a national interest in seeing them resolved promptly.

Additionally, Smith led a grand jury's indictment of Trump on Tuesday for his alleged efforts to overturn the 2020 election leading up to the January 6 attack on the Capitol.
